Christmas Decorating: I'm Thinking Ruby Red Grapefruit

Every Christmas presents to me an irresistible new opportunity to create, decorate and design for all our family and friends' gatherings and celebrations. This year, keeping things simpler and slightly more recessionista-friendly, I looked around my home for inspiration from things I see in everyday life.

I see citrus: grapefruit (both the outside golden with a blush of coral, and the inside deep ruby red), oranges, the citron green of my draperies. I see silver, gold and stars. An orange tree outside (ok, I live in California).

That's it! I have my inspiration, now down to work. Ollie, thrilled to have me puttering around the house all day Sunday, keeps a watchful eye on me!

The (potted) tree is inside and ready for lights and decorations. I spent 4 hours polishing silver (I'm a Southern Girl after all!), I found my citrus-y accent pieces, votives in great ruby color, and the perfect shade of poinsettias (chez Home Depot!). I even practiced making some lemon petit fours for the holidays (that caterer-daughter of mine sets the bar pretty high)!

So we are getting there! We are excited we have near- and far-flung family coming to visit and stay with us over Christmas, and we will be seeing lots of friends we haven't seen much this year. I still have a lot of decorating, cooking, gift-wrapping and merrymaking to do...stay tuned and I will show you as the tree gets done, the decorations up, the parties created!

A la prochaine!

A Recessionista Redecorates: Before & After's of a Silicon Valley Living Room

The clients had inhabited a Restoration Hardware meets Anthropologie living room for quite a few years. The colors were calming and restorative (blue, cream, brown and silver), and that worked for the frantic pace of Silicon Valley in the early 2000's, when we all needed sanctuary from the frightful rigors of the rise of e-commerce.

But that was before the Downturn of 2009; now there is a distinct need for energy, zing, cheer, a bit of glamour, some fun and comfort. Enter the interior designer on a mission!

.......................................

Let's take a peek at the { AFTER } pictures first:

The clients wanted to keep two non-negotiables: the colorful and graphic Turkish rug that had been in the dining room, and the whimsical chandelier sitting now in the left rear corner. Since the rug brings lots of energy, color and pattern, it was perfect. The chandelier, with its bounty of treasures of the sea---coral, pearls, silver, mercury glass---becomes the room's folly, injecting a bit of fun and cheer.

An unequivocally warm and sunny yellow was chosen for below and a warm cream above the dado. The dado itself is stenciled with a favorite motif, coral, in a favorite color, coral.

The Picasso print from the thrift store, brought in for its calm nature and happy palette, looks perfectly happy leaning against the wall with that large coral piece for company.

The room was transformed by the curvy, nod-to-Louis XIV mantel, and by the nod-to-Empire style mirror above. The mantel and mirror were salvage finds, now painted and applied with a gold leaf finish. Stunning!

View of the living room entering from the dining room shows how all the elements fit together. The citron draperies, the coral sofa, the yellow walls, the jade green of the carpet all form a sophisticated, citrus-y palette that draws you in and ties the room to the outdoors just beyond. Peeking in from the left side is the citron media cabinet. The cabinet is a dresser found at Afterwards, a favorite resale shop in Menlo Park, California. With its modern lines, lucite knobs and citron color, it was the perfect candidate for repurposing as a media cabinet.

Is there anything fresher or more cheering than a
bowl of lemons on a white mantel?

The dahlia is a motif also beloved and repeated in all the cushions, tying the varied seating pieces together visually. The mohair was chosen because it is green and sustainable; it repels stains and it's naturally fire-resistant, and certainly for it's undeniable glamour factor.

A stencil of coral was found in a book and repeated around the circumference of the living room. It is subtle but adds grace and charm to the walls. The yellow below defines and warms the space of the living room, which is open to the kitchen and dining rooms. It repeats a theme found in the chandelier of treasures from the sea.

..........................................

Now for the { BEFORE } pictures, below:

A Plain Jane flush mantel was too depressing.

A sweet, clutter-y space without a shred of glamour! The before living room had too much going on, and an awkward floor plan. The chilly blue-green wall color did not awaken the spirit.

Some of the elements..the Chinese cachepots on the table...made it into the redesign, but others were moved to different rooms, sold on Craigslist, or given to a grown daughter for her apartment.

We created an energetic, cheerful and room with a bit of glamour!

Back to My Living Room: Color + Fabric

citron media cabinet and coral mohair sofa

I am "backing into" designing my living room, because I found the mohair of my dreams at a great price. So the coral mohair is  driving the design around which everything else in the living room will be chosen.

I chose the citron media cabinet as a complimentary color for the coral, and to inject a modern/luxe feeling to the fusty old room. I also found fabulous fabric in lemongrass for the windows.

Next: choose fabrics for pillows + ottoman + small chair. This fabric will be used sparingly, so I want to really give it a punch.

lemongrass trevira for windows and a paisly I found

I love this trevira cs fabric, on the left above, for the windows. It is an amazing color! I loved it even before Michele Obama wore it on Inauguration Day. It's a synthetic, but looks and feels like silk. It's even washable, and is used for commercial spaces, which means it should wear well in my hard-used living room.  And it, too, is flame resistant.

So now to choose another fabric to use for pillows, a small chair, an ottoman. I kind of like the paisley above right, but decided against it because the background has too much yellow, and the fabric, almost a taffeta,  was a little too dressy for this room.

drapery fabric               another choice for upholstery?
the trevira with a coarser flowered fabric

This fabric above right intrigued me because I love large florals and the colors sing! It priced way too high for my budget, however, and I did have some reservations about the loose, linen-y weave. Ollie, my dog, would have it in shreds in no time.  And it looked a bit too granola for me.

the windows fabric and the perfect complement

Finally, I found it. The perfect balance between colors coral and citron, and in an overall modern floral pattern that is vibrant and energizing! It is also a very tightly woven jacquard fabric, with a bit of sheen, so it will wear perfectly, and will add just the right amount of glamour to the room.

What do you think?

Citron!

We love to find wonderful things to repurpose with a new life. This is one we found at our favorite consignment shop, Afterwards in Menlo Park.

It's long (96") and low (28") and just reeks of modern and elegant. The drawer pulls are lucite! It is in a perfect color to complement the coral mohair sofa.

It was a dresser for a bedroom. Not for long.

I'll take it to Joe, and have him convert the middle row of drawers into a door front, behind which we will install sliding shelves for the dvd, amplifier and cable box components. We'll have the door on a double hinge so that it folds back.  The flat screen hi def will hang on the wall above it. Very cool, very chic.

We now have a sleek citron media cabinet to join our luscious coral mohair sofa in our designer's living room.

Which brings us to the windows. I am thinking citron there too.  I just can't seem to get enough of that springy, sharp but soft color. What do you think?
